BMKG, Tomorrow Indonesia Advance AI Weather Nowcasting

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and PT Environmental Intelligence Indonesia (Tomorrow Indonesia) have completed a key stage of their joint project, a feasibility study aimed at improving short-term weather forecasts (nowcasting) up to three hours ahead using artificial intelligence (AI).

Tomorrow Indonesia President Director Muhamad Fitriansyah presented the study’s findings on Monday, January 19, 2026. “The AI-based Unified Precipitation (UP) system has demonstrated performance beyond conventional numerical weather prediction models,” he said, highlighting its ability to detect high-intensity rainfall within short timeframes.

The UP technology integrates BMKG’s weather radar data with global satellite observations, processed through AI modeling. As a result, forecasts can now be delivered with ultra-high spatial resolution of 0.5 kilometers and faster data updates.

Technical validation tests were conducted in Jakarta and West Java, regions known for complex weather patterns and vulnerability to hydrometeorological disasters. Fitriansyah noted that higher resolution and quicker updates enable faster responses to extreme weather in densely populated urban areas.

“Our focus is to support earlier and more accurate warnings for public safety and critical national sectors,” he added.

BMKG Deputy for Meteorology Guswanto emphasized that the collaboration aims to strengthen national resilience against extreme weather while improving operational efficiency across economic sectors. “BMKG remains the national authority for data governance, scientific validation, and public information delivery,” he said, stressing that the partnership with Tomorrow Indonesia is non-commercial, transparent, and compliant with regulations.

He further explained that AI-powered nowcasting could benefit disaster management, agriculture, aviation, maritime operations, and renewable energy. The collaboration will continue with plans to expand coverage to Sumatra and Sulawesi, as well as tailored applications such as crop planning and aviation safety.

“This enhancement of weather services is not just about technology; it is about saving lives and optimizing national economic efficiency,” Guswanto said.

The feasibility study follows a cooperation agreement signed between BMKG and Tomorrow Indonesia on February 4, 2025. Future service development will be discussed through separate mechanisms and agreements in line with applicable legal provisions. (Naura Sofia/Sri Wahyuni)
