RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta: Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar said prayer is important for spirituality, social responsibility, and environmental sustainability. He made this statement for the Prophet Muhammad's Isra Miraj commemoratio .
During the event, the minister explained that the Prophet Muhammad Saw. received the command to pray five times a day. This act of worship is the foundation for developing a Muslim personality of faith, discipline, and noble character.
"When people pray with true appreciation and understanding, it can create individuals who are very aware of their surroundings, socially sensitive, and concerned about the environment," said the Minister at the Isra Miraj commemoration in Istiqlal Mosque, Jakarta, on Thursday, January 15, 2026, as quoted by the ministry official website.
He reiterated, prayer performed correctly can prevent evil and wrongdoing while fostering an attitude of social and ecological responsibility.
Furthermore, the Minister of Religious Affairs highlighted
thaharah (purification) as a prerequisite for prayer's validity, emphasizing its role in maintaining personal and environmental purity. Prayer's movement and procedures convey a message of discipline, moderation, and self-control in developing and utilizing natural resources fairly and sustainably. The Minister also emphasized that the essence of the Isra and Mi'raj demonstrates that Islam is the foundation of ecological ethics. He continued by saying that the concept of tawhid implies the unity of creation and that the universe is part of the qauniyah verses that reflect the greatness of Allah SWT.
"Damaging nature means ignoring the signs of Allah's power, while protecting and caring for the environment is part of the manifestation of faith and obedience to Him," he said.
Through the commemoration of Isra' and Mi'raj 1447 H, the Minister of Religious Affairs invites all people to use it as a moment of reflection to reaffirm humanity's role as caliphs on earth. He believes the current environmental crisis demands a holistic piety, one that is reflected not only in religious observance but also in maintaining the balance of nature and using resources wisely.
"May this commemoration of Isra' Mi'raj be a turning point for all of us in strengthening spiritual piety, social piety that upholds justice and the common good, and ecological piety manifested through real concern for environmental sustainability. True piety is not only what connects us to heaven, but also what protects the earth upon which we stand," he concluded.
This year's Isra Miraj religious commemoration was held more openly at the Istiqlal Mosque with the aim of expanding the participation of the congregation and the government. This approach differs from the previous practice of holding it directly at the presidential palace. ***
