RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is accelerating its decarbonization drive by expanding public electric vehicle charging facilities, with state-owned electricity company PLN rolling out hundreds of charging stations nationwide by the end of 2025.
Special Advisor to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Satya Hangga Yudah Widya Putra, said the widespread availability of public EV charging stations (SPKLU) will accelerate the government’s carbon reduction targets while supporting economic growth.
Speaking in Jakarta on Sunday, Hangga emphasized that SPKLU offers greater flexibility than gas-fueled vehicle charging stations (SPBG), since they can be built anywhere with access to the electricity grid.
“I hope this ecosystem continues to expand to support decarbonization targets and achieve eight percent economic growth,” he said during a working visit to PLN’s SPKLU facility in Braga, Bandung, West Java, on Saturday, January 17, 2026, as quoted by
Antara.Hangga praised West Java’s aggressive expansion of electricity infrastructure, noting that 33 percent of its supply already comes from renewable energy sources. EV adoption in the province has surged, accounting for 22 percent of national electricity sales through PLN’s West Java Distribution Unit (UID).
By December 2025, PLN had operated 501 SPKLU units across 289 strategic locations, including ultra-fast charging stations at every rest area along the Trans-Java Toll Road to serve intercity EV travelers.
Senior Manager for Communications and Public Affairs at PLN UID West Java, Krisantus H. Setyawan, said the expansion of SPKLU reflects the company’s concrete support for the government’s decarbonization program.
Beyond fixed stations, he said, PLN has also introduced SPKLU Mobile services to assist customers facing low battery conditions before reaching a charging point.
Manager of PLN’s Bandung Customer Service Unit (UP3), Donna Sinatra, reported that by the end of 2025, there were 400,625 charging transactions, delivering a total of 9,481,373 kWh of energy, or a 298 percent increase from the previous year.
Meanwhile, Customer Service Manager at PLN UID West Java, Retna Arliana, highlighted ongoing efforts to improve user experience. One recent innovation, launched in December 2025, is the SPKLU Queue feature on the PLN Mobile app, allowing users to obtain digital queue numbers and check station availability through color-coded indicators.
Hangga added that his visit also aimed to identify bureaucratic hurdles that could discourage investment. “With reliable infrastructure and competitive incentives, we hope more people will embrace electric vehicles and public transport powered by electricity, creating a cleaner and more sustainable future for Indonesia,” he said. ***
